Start with the need—not the product

The right type of life insurance depends on what you need the coverage to accomplish, how long you need it, your budget, health, and broader financial picture.

Term Life

Coverage for a defined period, often chosen for income replacement, raising children, debt, or mortgage protection. It can provide a larger death benefit for a lower initial premium than many permanent policies.

Permanent Life

Coverage designed to remain in force for life when properly funded and maintained. Depending on the policy, it may build cash value and support long-term legacy or liquidity goals.

Indexed Universal Life (IUL)

A form of permanent universal life insurance with cash-value interest crediting linked in part to the performance of a market index, subject to policy floors, caps, participation rates, charges, and other terms.

Protection priorities

What can life insurance help protect?

  • Household income and everyday living expenses
  • A mortgage or other major debts
  • Children’s education and future needs
  • Final expenses and transition costs
  • Business or estate liquidity needs
  • A planned inheritance or charitable legacy

Mortgage protection is life insurance

Mortgage protection is typically a life-insurance strategy built around the goal of helping your family keep the home or pay down the mortgage if you die. Because that goal is specific, we also created a dedicated mortgage-protection page.

Common questions

Clear answers before you make a decision.

How much life insurance do I need?

A useful starting point is the financial gap your family would face: income replacement, debts, mortgage, education, final expenses, and existing assets. The appropriate amount is individual.

Is term or permanent life better?

Neither is automatically better. Term is often efficient for temporary high-dollar needs; permanent coverage can fit lifelong needs and may include cash value. Some families use both.

Does IUL guarantee stock-market returns?

No. IUL is insurance, not direct stock-market investing. Index-linked crediting is governed by the policy’s terms, including caps, participation rates, floors, charges, and other limitations.
